Now in its fifteenth year, the Richmond Summer Harp Institute offers up to three weeks of intensive study of the harp, with immersion in both its solo and ensemble literature. Harpists will focus on technique and on performance skills through a conservatory-styled program. It is also a week of sharing with other musicians; of making lifetime friendships; of developing interpersonal skills; and of growing as a musician and an individual. The daily schedule of classes, individual lessons, coaching by our distinguished faculty, ensemble rehearsals and workshops a challenging and exhilarating artistic experience is complemented by a full slate of stimulating guest artists, performance seminars and extracurricular activities.
The combination of an outstanding faculty, the beautiful and historic setting in the heart of Virginia, a rich musical environment and talented students from across the United States makes the Institute an exciting, memorable and rewarding experience. The RSHI offers a supportive and inspiring musical environment for the student artist. Most importantly, harp students of all levels, from beginners to advanced are welcome. Institute weeks and repertoire selections are tailored to match student abilities. Students will receive instruction in solo and ensemble repertoire for both pedal and lever harps and emphasis will be placed on the development of effective practice skills, memorization techniques, ensemble/chamber music skills and performance etiquette. Each day will include individual lessons, harp ensemble, chamber music, individual practice, music theory, history and musicianship classes and seminars. All harp students will participate in the RSHI Harp Ensemble. A concert of solo and ensemble music will conclude the week.
