Academic Classes

Richmond Summer Harp Institute
Mission & Programs

Anna E., 2005 RSHI student
“The RHSI helped me decide that I wanted to pursue harp as my career. I have a deeper appreciation of music because of the music history and theory classes which were incredibly inspirational. It was truly an amazing and life-changing experience for me!"

A variety of harp-related classes will be offered.

Music History
Each daily session will explore Western music history in a broad fashion. The class will serve as an introduction to music of the Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Twentieth Century periods. The focus of the course will be on listening along with interdisciplinary links to history (such as a visit to Agecroft Hall above), architecture and other art forms.

Music Theory
Learn the language, terminology and mechanics of music. Learn fundamentals of sound, notation, intervals, chords and musical forms.

Aural Skills/ Ear Training
This class is designed to help develop a keener sense for listening and is integrated with the music theory class. Each student will be able to distinguish between different intervals and chords. Melodic and rhythmic dictation exercises will be given

Eurhythmics
Throughout the morning and afternoon sessions, we will take “breaks” to participate in Dalcroze inspired rhythmic movement activities. Founded by Swiss music educator Emile Jaques Dalcroze, Eurhythmics is a unique approach to developing musicianship through movement, ear training and improvisation activities.
