Classical Jam June 1, 2008

Richmonders who can’t travel to either the American Harp Society’s 38th National Conference in Michigan in June or to the London Music Festival in England in December are fortunate to be able to experience the magnificent musical variety of The American Youth Harp Ensemble (AYHE) in concert locally. The Richmond-based group, which has been invited to perform at both of the prestigious events later this year, offers a preview of their finest repertoire during their annual spring concert, titled “Classical Jam”, on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. The family-friendly event takes place in the sanctuary of Grace Baptist Church, located at 4200 Dover Road in Richmond. Tickets, which are $15 at the door, are also available through May 31st for $10 at Coppola’s Deli in Carytown, Grove Ave Pharmacy, or by calling 804.837.9355.

The upcoming program represents a culmination of the efforts of nearly fifty Richmond-area harpists, ages six to eighteen, and features a variety of classical, jazz, and world music arranged and composed specifically for the Ensemble. The professional-caliber Ensemble, a veritable “living treasure” under the direction of Ms. Lynnelle Ediger-Kordzaia, has received accolades from audiences around the nation and the world. The group is well known for its musical sophistication, rich sound, emotional power, and imaginative repertoire. Works performed on June 1st will span Celtic to African influences and from Bach to Mancini.

AYHE has brought world-class music to enthusiastic audiences in the U.S. and abroad through hundreds of performances, recordings, television and radio features, most recently on CNN, ABC, PBS, and NPR. The Ensemble made its international debut, performing in the Maastricht Music Festival and has had other notable performances at the Kennedy Center; the Edinburgh Festival; the 34th American Harp society national conference; Salle Gaveau, Paris; Salla Puccini, Milan; in 2001 and again in 2007 in the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall; and at the United Nations.

American Youth Harp Ensemble is the premier youth ensemble of The HARPS Foundation, which offers a unique and unparalleled opportunity for music instruction in the greater Richmond area and is a national model for youth development. HARPS Foundation programs serve over 150 students from elementary, middle, and high schools in central Virginia. Their unique outreach and mentoring programs, in partnership with the Metro Richmond Boys and Girls Club, Richmond Parks and Recreation, Charles City County Public Schools, and the Resources for Independent Living Center (a transitioning agency for students with disabilities), reach and impact a diverse community. Most recently the AYHE students dedicated themselves and applied their musical artistry to effect change on a global scale. Through their participation in the Amani Peace Concert in May, they successfully raised over $10,000 to support a children’s school in Liberia, demonstrating their commitment to the core values of the HARPS Foundation and the American Youth Harp Ensemble.
